Clinical manifestations
The clinical manifestations of hyperprolactinemia depend upon the hormone level, the sex of the patient, and individual sensitivity to the lactogenic and mammotropic effects of the hormone. In women, hyperprolactinemia results in the socalled galactorrhea-amenorrhea syndrome. Persistent lactation, unprovoked by breast stimulation, and amenorrhea are the classic features. The syndrome may appear following pregnancy or may be unrelated to pregnancy. In men, galactorrhea can occur, but impotence and loss of libido are more frequent complaints.
